AMISTAD, THE MOVIE (1997) - QUESTIONNAIRE




What is the movie about? Summarize the plot of the film mentioning the main characters.
The film started in a slavery boat called La Amistad in which Cinque the tribal leader was tiying off his handcuffs, he had designed a plan in which slaves will take part of the boat killing all white people with the purpose of returning back to Africa, but when Africans were asleep two white men who were responsible of the route changed it into the opposite direction America. Until this moment slaves fought for their rights in an American judge, they were defended by a lawyer called Roger Sherman.

What was the Triangular Trade? What nations benefited from it?
The best-known triangular trading systems were across the Atlantic Ocean, especially the Atlantic slave trade, which lasted from the late 16th to early 19th centuries. During this time, European countries such as Britain, Spain and France had colonies in the Americas and Africa. The ships carrying slaves, crops and manufactured goods between West Africa, the Caribbean and American colonies and the colonial powers in Europe.

Do some research and explain the conditions in which slaves were captured and transported from Africa to the Americas?
The first curious fact was that the boat was designed to carry sugar and not humans, and another fact was that they only had food for 4 days and the trip lasted 63 days.

What enlightened ideas appear in the movie?
The main enlightened ideas that appear in the movie are the right of freedom and equality.

Who was Joseph Cinqué? Did he really exist? 
Cinqué was the tribal leader of the ones that were kidnapped from Africa and because of this, the one who started the mutiny on the boat. He also talk in the several judgements an spoke with John Quincy Adams. He really existed, he was born in 1810 and died in 1870 in Sierra Leona. He used to be a rice agriculture an he had had three children with his wife.

What is the role of John Quincy Adams, former US President, in the movie?
He defends Africans in the supreme court using arguments like they had "vindicated their own right of liberty" by "executing the justice of Heaven" upon a "pirate murderer, their tyrant and oppressor."

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

The American Declaratation of Independence is a document,  approved by the  Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, that announced the separation of North American British colonies from Great Britain. It talks about what they called unalienable rights: equality, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, despite they (upper class) omitted Indians, black slaves and women. I think that both historian,s interpretations of this statement could be close to reality, it is an evidence that Bernard Bailyn one adopts the most extreme position, he says Americans believed an evil and deliberate conspiracy of Britain against their liberty, they believed that England was trying to enslave them and the only option that they had to protect themselves was to use the power which God has given to them. MIGRATION: SPAIN IN-OUT

SPAIN IN                       Firstly I am going to analyze the inmigration in Spain, inmigrats that come to Spain with the dream of get a new life are usually from LEDCs such as Morocco (30%), Romania (25%), Ecuador (10%), Colombia (12%), Peru (5%) or Bolivia (2%). Inmigrant from those countries came to Spain every years to get better conditions, job, home, rights... Luckily most of them found a job, working as agricultors, builder or cleaners and could life better but not the best. Also Spain in this case, get some "exchange" if we can call like that, because they pay taxes, population increase and lot of things that contribute to the country.  In the opposite side the inmigrants that came from MEDCs such as United Kingdom, France or Germany are usuallyyoung people that have studied a career and want to find job; or retired people that like Spain and want to life here to being comfortable.   SPAIN OUT ...
